How to Prepare Your Iron Fence for Winter

Iron fence winter

Make sure that your iron fence is prepared to make it through the winter.

While preparing your home and property for winter, it is incredibly important not to overlook your iron fence and leave it exposed to the harsh conditions and unpredictable temperatures of the colder months. While iron is famed for its durability, there is no fencing material that lasts forever and requires no care whatsoever. An iron fence is one of the most expensive to replace, so it is important that you care for it year round, but especially in the face of the cold winter. Here are some steps you can take to ensure that your iron fence is winter ready.

Clean Your Wrought Iron Fence

Before winter takes hold, it is an excellent idea to upkeep regular fence cleanings. How often you clean depends on a number of factors, but weekly is the general ideal. Even a monthly cleaning, however, will make a huge difference leading up to winter. Snow does not mean that your fence cannot get dirty and if it is not clean to start, you will have a massive cleanup project in the spring when the dirty snow and ice start to melt around your fence. If you do a pre-winter fence cleaning, you will be grateful you did in the spring.

Remove Rust

Many iron fence owners ask if it is a better idea to remove rest before winter has started or after it has concluded. The answer is that pre-winter rust removal is the smarter choice. Your fence will likely experience even more rusting during the winter months, meaning that you could potentially face a large rust build up come spring if you are not proactive. Before it gets too cold outside, take the time to remove rust from your iron fence.

Take Steps To Prepare Your Iron Fence For Winter

Don’t only clean and remove rust from your fence, but take the time to sand, prime, and paint it. Most people do not do all of these things in a day, and doing them in the cold is incredible unpleasant. Waiting too long also means that your project may be put on hold by inclement weather. Get a jump start in the early fall for your fence’s sake.
