Galvanization And Its Importance For The Longevity Of Your Wrought Iron Fence

Understanding how to take care of your wrought iron fence will extend it’s life.

Purchasing a new wrought iron fence is a fantastic decision. They add timeless elegance and increased security to every property they surround. However, galvanization is an important step when it comes to protecting the longevity of your fence and your investment. Why is galvanization so important, and what exactly is it?

Hot Dip Galvanization

This is the best possible way to protect your wrought iron fence from rust. It will protect wrought iron fences that get heavy use, are in humid environments, or that need extra protection. In addition, the metal used for your fence will be dipped into liquid molten zinc. Furthermore, the zinc will permeate every crack of your fence and is typically present in a thicker layer than e-coatings. Since the coating is thicker, there is a lower chance of scratching or scraping causing the metal to be exposed and be susceptible to rust.

How Galvanization Works

Galvanization requires about 80% of the work to be done beforehand and only 20% of the work happening during the actual coating itself. In fact, the galvanization process involves:

  • Caustic cleaning
  • Rising
  • Pickling
  • Rinsing
  • Dipping into a flux solution
  • Galvanizing in a molten zinc bath
  • Cooling
  • Checking over the final products

What Happens if Galvanization Isn’t Done Properly?

Improper galvanization is identifiable in many different ways, and typically the problem is that the parts were not properly cleaned in advance. For instance, if the finish is peeling off or rusting, the wrought iron fence has not been properly galvanized. Unfortunately, you typically cannot tell if there is a problem until it’s too late. In fact, trusting a reliable and professional fence contractor like Hercules Fence Newport News can make all of the difference. We only provide our customers with the best materials, properly prepared, and properly installed. Choosing the right contractor will help make sure that the galvanization process is done the right way.
