How to Get it Right: Choosing Your Fence’s Height

The fence height is a factor that often gets overlooked, and that’s why we’d like to shed some light on this topic. Continue reading to learn more.

Many considerations go into choosing the right fence. In last week’s blog, we discussed choosing the right fence color. Today, we’re going to focus on the height. The fence height is a factor that often gets overlooked, and that’s why we’d like to shed some light on this topic. Continue reading to learn more.

How Do I Choose the Fence Height?

Three main factors go into choosing a fence’s height. One, you have to pick a style that suits you best. Two, you have to figure out what the purpose of fencing is. Three, you have to consider local regulations.

What Will the Style of Your Fence Be?

A well-designed fence doesn’t just blend into a property. It should play a significant role in beautifying your home and enhancing it. Different aesthetics have different meanings and purposes. For example, a picket fence provides an all-American, colonial aesthetic. A dark wooden fence is more stoic.

What is the Purpose of Your Fence?

A top reason that many homeowners invest in fencing is to feel safer and more secure, especially when raising young children. Fencing helps keep both children and adults safe from trespassers. Another common goal is to protect their garden from deer or other animals, and other homeowners may only think about aesthetics. It all depends on the individual. Once you narrow down the purpose, picking the fence height will make more sense. Here are some examples:

  • Property Boundary Fences– In this case, it means that the use of fencing is to separate your property from your neighbor’s. If you have ample space, then this is ideal for keeping away trespassers. Short property boundary fences are excellent, too, for separating your backyard from your neighbor’s. Typically, these fences range from 3-6 feet
  • Privacy Fences– If you want to enjoy your yard without feeling watched, then a privacy fence is ideal. Usually, they’re about 7-8 feet. Six feet should be the minimum, but make sure to check local regulations.
  • Fences That Will Keep Deer and Trespassers Away – Vinyl or wood fences prevent an animal from crawling underneath. The same concept goes for keeping your pets in your yard. Consider an 8-foot fence. In the case of burglars, adding pointed accessories is a good idea in case they try to hop over.

What Are Your Local Regulations?

Check local regulations before becoming content on a fence’s height. You never want fence installation to happen, only to find out that you need to take it down shortly after. Are you interested in fence installation? Give us a call!
