How Do I Prepare My Fence for Fall?

Adding a fence to your home is a great way to improve your space while adding a vast range of benefits

Adding a fence to your home is a great way to improve your space while adding a vast range of benefits, but if you’re not caring for it, you’re missing out. As the seasons start to change, it’s a good idea to begin doing minor maintenance to all types of fences to help ensure that they’re ready for the winter. You want them to last and look great for as long as possible. Fall is the perfect time to start caring for your fence if you haven’t already.

Clean It Up

One of the essential steps for keeping fences of all types looking and working as well as possible is to ensure that they’re clean and debris free. With the falling leaves and buildup of plant matter, it’s critical to clean around your fence in fall. Remove dead leaves and any trimming debris and removing any climbing plants. Not only will this tidying mean your fence looks better, but it will also prevent issues as well. Having waste around your fence can lead to several problems. If you have a wood fence, the buildup of moisture can cause rot or rust on metal.

Additionally, it can lead to moist conditions perfect for mold growth on all types of fences. Even vinyl can grow mold and mildew, and while it’s less of an issue, it will cause attractive stains. Make sure to remove leaves and buildup of sticks and other debris throughout the season.

Check For Damage

After a summer and early fall of rain, wind, and potentially animals and children playing and putting pressure on fencing; fall is the perfect time to check for signs of damage. Perform a full perimeter check to look for loose posts that may need repair. It’ll be much easier to make any fixes now, before the ground freezes.

Stain and Paint

If you have a wood fence, fall is the perfect time to add a coat of stain. With the humidity finally dropping fall allows your wood fence stain to sink in and dry thoroughly before the harsh winter weather comes. Likewise, if you have a metal fence that needs repainting or spot painting, fall is the time to do so.
