How To Protect Your Fence From Storm Damage

September and October are known for having extreme thunderstorms and even record high winds in some areas.  While you want to protect your whole home from storm damage, it is crucial that you do not forget the fencing that surrounds your property.  No one wants to see their fence that they invested money into damaged beyond repair after a storm comes through their town.  There are several ways you can protect your fence, regardless of the material, from storm damage.

Trim It Down

One of the major causes of storm fence damage is falling tree limbs crushing one part or your whole fence.  So it is crucial that your trim all overhanging tree limb and other structures that could damage your fence.  If one of your neighbor’s tree limbs hangs over your fence, ask them if you could trim it for them.  Also, remove any dead or dying trees in your yard because they are at risk of being uprooted during a storm.

Perform Some Repairs

Your fence is more susceptible to damage and even being uprooted if any posts are loose.  You should inspect your fencing regularly, during and outside of storm season, for any issues.  If you notice that are any posts are lifting out of the ground, then take the proper actions to rebury them securely.  Make sure to inspect for any cracks and loose board and repair them immediately especially before a storm hits.

Apply Some Extra Reinforcement

For homeowners that live in areas that are susceptible to consistent storm damage, it is recommended to reinforce your rails and posts with wood, metal, or concrete.  Although any type of reinforcement during installation will increase your total fencing costs, it will pay off in the long run.  Extra reinforcement around your fencing protects your fence from uprooting during storm season.
