How to Protect Your Home from Wildlife with Fencing

Learn how fencing can protect your property from wildlife.

As a homeowner, you may think that you’ve created your own little getaway, completely shielded and covered from the outside world. However, many of your furry friends probably have a slightly different understanding. That’s when residential fencing comes in. Although it does enhance the beauty of your property, your fence can also help protect your home and family from the wild life that surrounds your home. Here’s how you can protect your property from the animals that live in the area around your home.

Fencing Techniques

Installing a fence around your property is one of the most effective ways to keep wild life in the wild. It’s an investment, but it’s one that will ultimately save you more money in the long run from having to consistently repair the damage that animals often create. There are a few techniques you should keep in mind to ensure that you’re getting the most out of your residential fence. Solid fences will block the animals from being able to see what’s in your yard, which therefore takes away the temptation to access your property. An electric fence will allow you to maintain your view while providing a quick shock to the animals. Before starting any installation, be sure to check all your local regulations about the fence materials that you’re allowed to use and the maximum height that you’re legally allowed to build your fence. Also, let your neighbors know about your plans as the part of your fence that faces their property might impact the function and look of their property as well.

Deer

Deer is an animal that’s hard to keep away because they can jump over obstacles that are up to 12 feet tall. That’s higher than what most residential fences are allowed to be built. Use an 8 to 10-foot fence with a 45-degree slant in the direction of the deer to deter them from trying to jump.

Cats and Dogs

A wire mesh fence that’s about 3-feet high will keep dogs and cats from jumping over. Make sure that it is anchored with sturdy posts so that aggressive dogs can’t knock it over.

Tunneling Pests

Some animals choose a subtler approach to getting onto your property. Gophers, chipmunks, and moles will tunnel under your fence, which causes a unique challenge. Surround your garden with wire mesh embedded about 3 feet into the ground.
