Know When to Replace Your Residential Fence

replace residential fence

This old fence looks like it has lived a good, long life.

You may be ready to give your fence a good spring cleaning, but sometimes a good cleaning just doesn’t do the trick. A crumbling or damaged fence is not only an eyesore, it can also be a safety hazard, especially when you have small children or pets. The key is to know when a cleaning will suffice and when it’s time to repair or replace your fence.

Damage Over Time

Over time, weather will have a degrading effect on your fence. Rain can rust a wrought iron fence. Rain that has soaked into an unprotected wooden fence can cause rot in the summer or freeze and expand causing cracks in the winter. The sun beats down on your fence, which can discolor a wood stain or cause paint to start flaking. Even termites are a worry, as they can eat away at the structural integrity of a wooden fence. There are solutions to many of these problems, such as applying a new stain or coat of paint or calling an exterminator. However, if your fence is wobbly or falling apart, if may be time to replace your residential fence.

Sudden Structural Damage

Some of us just have back luck. Maybe your teenager accidentally backed the car into a fence post, or your new puppy is having a hard time learning not to chew on the fence. Whatever the case, sudden fence damage is an unfortunate thing that happens to many homeowners. Luckily, there are often times when the damage is negligible enough that you only need to replace part of your fence instead of the whole thing. If the car only hit a single isolated area of the fence, you may be able to replace just that part. If your puppy has chewed most of the entire bottom of your fence, however, it may be time to get a new, dog-friendly fence.
