Prepare Your Wood Fence for Summer

wood fence

A well-maintained fence looks stunning for years to come.

You’re testing the chlorine levels in the backyard pool, weeding the striking flowers in the front yard, and hosing off the front porch to make your home ready for the summer. In the midst of all the to-dos around the house, it’s easy to forget that your wood fence needs some summer sprucing as well. Here are some easy ways to prepare your wood fence for the humid, hot, and sunny summer ahead.

Shake It Off

First things first, take a walk around your wood fence and remove any excess debris and yard waste that has accumulated. This is an especially important first step, as any summer rainstorms or morning dew left behind on your lawn will gather in the debris surrounding your wood fence and expose it to potentially damaging moisture. While moisture can seem like an insignificant problem in the short term, it can lead to serious damage in the future from mold growth, mildew, insect infestations, and fence rot. All of these issues can be costly to fix or cause you to need an entirely new fence. By preventing moisture from seeping into your fence, you can prevent expensive repairs down the road.

Trim the Trees

While the springtime is known for gentle rains that coax flowers out of the ground, summer is known for quick and heavy downpours of rain. These summer thunderstorms bring strong gusts of wind, torrential rain, thunder, lightning, and potential flooding. Any tree branches that need to be trimmed should be taken care of before summer storm season, as they could be knocked down in your yard and damage your home or wood fence.

Time for a Bath

While moisture is not good to have around your wood fence at any time, especially in the summer, it is a great idea to give your fence a thorough washing at the start of the season. Over time, your wood fence accumulates residue from bird droppings, pollution, kids playing in the yard, and your lawnmower brushing against it and leaving behind dirt and grime. The best way to quickly and deeply clean your wood fence is with a power washer and a trained operator. By deep cleaning your wood fence once a season, you can keep it in top shape for years to come.
