Chain-link fencing has a unique history that can make us appreciate them in a new way.
Chain-link fencing has one classic characteristic: its metal weave pattern across every fence panel. At the same time, chain-link fences come in many forms, such as residential fences, sports fences, high-security fences, and bridge fences. If you’re someone who is curious about where things come from in our modern world, below is a brief history of chain-link fencing.
The Industrial Revolution
The history of fences goes back thousands of years, but the history of modern chain-link fencing is much more recent. One could say it began due to the Industrial Revolution in Britain, which spanned between the mid-1700s and the mid-1800s. The Industrial Revolution in Britain saw massive development in textile manufacturing and the mechanization of many things. America’s Industrial Revolution spanned from the late 1700s to the early 1900s and included the development of steel manufacturing.
1844: Charles Barnard’s Wire Weaving Machine
In Victorian England, Charles Barnard took inspiration from textile weaving machines to create a wire weaving machine, which translated into the chain-link fence. There is no clear evidence on who the first inventor of the chain-link fence is, but it is likely that different inventors in Europe were the first producers of the modern chain-link fence. Even so, Charles Barnard is credited with creating the classic diamond-shaped metal weave pattern.
1934: Frank J. Mafera’s Residential Chain-Link Fencing
In 1915, Guy Mafera patented a chain-link mesh that was safer and more robust than the current types. His patent was for wire in spring beds. His brother, Frank J. Mafera, applied the design in a new patent to residential chain-link fencing in 1934. The material was stronger and safer, preventing the wire from accidentally catching people’s clothing.
Chain-Link Developments throughout the Years
Other chain-link fence manufacturers cropped up in the United States throughout the decades, developing chain-link fencing for all kinds of applications. While they come in different configurations for different purposes, they also come in different materials and finishes, such as galvanized steel, vinyl-coated steel, polyester-coated steel, and aluminum.
