What’s The Difference Between Wrought and Ornamental Iron?

Each material has its pros and cons, but wrought iron and ornamental iron are particularly unique

When choosing a fence for your home or business, you may find that you have a wide range of options. Each material has its pros and cons, but wrought iron and ornamental iron are particularly unique. While they may look relatively similar, and they are both excellent options, they do have a few differences that are worth noting. Knowing the difference between these two can help you make a more educated decision about what will be right for you.

Different types of Iron

You might be surprised to learn that wrought iron fencing and ornamental iron fencing are made from different materials. The iron itself is a raw material that is mined from the earth, to create any fencing. This raw iron must be treated with other materials. For wrought iron, a blend of iron silicate is added; this creates a long-lasting, durable, and reliable final product. Ornamental iron is made by combining carbon with raw iron to make what is a type of steel. The result is an affordable, easy to work with material that has the same look as wrought iron.

Ornamental Iron

Thanks to the ease of production and use, ornamental iron allows for a more cost-effective fence that is lighter weight and more uncomplicated to repair, match, and extend. It often comes with a 10-25 year warranty and when crafted with care, can be quite sturdy. That said, it isn’t as durable and long-lasting as wrought iron and will need replacement more frequently.

Wrought Iron

If you’re looking for a custom, high-quality fence that will last for ages, wrought iron is the way to go. With its strength and reliability, you won’t find a better fence material for security than iron. You also will have the advantage of a unique design. However, it is more costly and does require more exceptional care and longer manufacturing time.
