How To Prepare Your Lawn For Winter

It is middle of November which means winter will be here before you know it, so it is the perfect time to start preparing your home for the frigid cold weather.  When preparing your home for winter, you should start with the outside of your property specifically your lawn.  The last thing you want is your grass to be dead and brown once spring comes around.  Luckily, there are a few simple ways to prepare your lawn for winter so it will look luscious and beautiful in the spring.

Learn how to prepare your lawn for winter!

Mow and Aerate

Although the fall season is winding down, you should still be mowing your lawn until ground freezes.  Towards the end of the season, place your mower’s blade to the lowest setting making sure you are not cutting off more than 1/3 of your grass height at one time.  It is also the perfect time to aerate your grass which when you use a machine to punch holes into your soil, extracting plugs of dirt at the same time.  This process allows water, oxygen, and fertilizer to reach your grass’s roots.

Raking

Even though it is not every homeowner’s favorite task, it is critical to rake up all of your leaves before winter weather hits your home.  Make sure to rake up your leaves as soon as they hit your lawn.  If you wait for all of the leaves to fall from your trees, then they will become wet and stick together having the potential to breed fungus.  If you have a large lawn, then you can use a lawnmower that is connected with a vacuum bag.

Fertilize

The end of fall is the best time to fertilize your lawn the grassroots and stems continue to grow quickly during colder weather.  Fertilizing your lawn now allows the grass to grow deep roots and reserves nutrients for when spring arrives.  Make sure to apply a dry fertilize all grassy areas of your lawn evenly and do not miss any spots.
